October
1957 Derek Riley & Company started in Johannesburg. November 1961
the name changed to Automotive Lamps and Warning Signals (Pty)
Ltd (Alaws).
January 1962 Hella Germany's holding company "Reinhold Poersch GmBH" invested
in Alaws. March 1967 name changed to Hella (South Africa)(Pty)Ltd
and
the factory moved to Uitenhage near Port Elizabeth. July 1985 Hella Germany
took majority share in Hella (South Africa)(Pty)Ltd. March 1989 40%
shareholding
is sold to Metair. June 1993 Hella (South Africa)(Pty)Ltd is now wholly
owned by Metair. A Licence Agreement and an exclusive Agency Agreement
with Hella Germany is signed. April 1998 - 100% of Harness Division in
Uitenhage is sold to an overseas Industrial Group. On 01 March 2009
Hella South Africa (Pty) Ltd changed its name to Lumotech (Pty) Ltd.
This was due to Hella Germany establishing a distribution
network in South Africa to grow their Aftermarket business. Lumotech
(Pty) Ltd will continue to manufacture Aftermarket products but will
now distribute through Hella Automotive Saouth African and not through
the individual Aftermarket customers. This streamlines the logistics
and adminsitration process and is of great benefit to Lumotech.
